Plain English, no obligation
How people pay for a wet room in Scotland
Most people assume they're paying for the whole thing themselves. Often they aren't. Here is how the funding actually works, in plain English, with no obligation to use us.
Three ways this gets paid for
Council grant
Every Scottish council runs a Scheme of Assistance. For adaptations assessed as essential, the mandatory grant is a minimum of 80% of eligible costs, rising to 100% for households on certain benefits. You may be entitled — the decision rests with the council and an OT assessment.
VAT relief
Qualifying work carried out for a disabled or chronically sick person in their own home is often zero-rated for VAT. There's a short declaration to sign and we handle it. If your job doesn't qualify, we'll say so before you commit.
Paying privately
Fixed written price, no deposit taken before you're happy, no finance company involved and no salesman sitting at your kitchen table until you sign something.

The steps, honestly
- 1
Ask for an OT assessment
Through your council's social work or housing department. It starts the whole process.
- 2
The OT decides what's needed
They visit and judge whether the adaptation is essential.
- 3
The council confirms funding
Grant level is set. This is where most people get stuck, and where we help.
- 4
The work gets done
Two days, usually.

Who decides whether I get a grant?
Your local council, following an assessment by an occupational therapist. We are not part of that decision and cannot promise an outcome — but we can tell you what we have seen in similar homes and help you complete the forms.
What counts as an 'essential' adaptation?
Broadly, work needed so a disabled person can use their own home safely — a level-access shower where a bath can no longer be used is the most common example. The occupational therapist makes that judgement.
How long does the grant process take?
It varies by council and by waiting list, typically a few weeks to several months from the first request for an assessment. That is why we suggest asking for the OT assessment early, even if you are not ready to decide.
Do I have to use a contractor the council picks?
In most cases you can choose your own contractor for grant-assisted work, provided the quote and specification are approved. Check the detail with your council's Scheme of Assistance team.
